Cloudways vs Kinsta: which managed host gives you more for the price?

Choose Kinsta when you run one important WordPress site and want a fully guided, bundled product. Choose Cloudways Flexible when you run several sites, want to pick your cloud provider and server size, and are happy to manage a few separate extras. For a single small site the entry prices are closer than most comparisons admit. For portfolios of sites, Cloudways is usually far cheaper per site.

Both are managed WordPress-capable hosts built on serious cloud infrastructure, so this is not a cheap-versus-premium story. The real difference is the pricing model: Kinsta bills per WordPress install with everything bundled, while Cloudways bills per server and lets you run as many applications as its resources handle.

We have not benchmarked these hosts against each other or timed their support teams, so this guide makes no speed or support-quality claims. It compares verified prices, plan structures and included services, checked on October 22, 2026, and tells you exactly what to confirm before paying.

Per-site vs per-server: two different ways of buying managed hosting

Kinsta's model is simple to understand: pick a plan, and the platform handles the rest. Cloudways' model is simple to optimise: pick a server, and add only the services you need. Neither is universally better. The wrong choice is paying Kinsta per-site prices for a fleet of small sites, or paying for a large Cloudways server that one small site will never use.

Cloudways provides a managed stack, not root access or unlimited custom-software support. Kinsta provides a managed WordPress platform, not a general-purpose server. If your project needs unusual software or server-level control, verify compatibility with the provider before assuming either product supports it.

Cloudways vs Kinsta pricing: entry prices, add-ons and the real monthly bill

The figures below come from Kinsta's pricing page, checked October 22, 2026, and our October 20 Cloudways pricing research. They are dated planning references, not guaranteed checkout quotes. Promotions, regions, taxes and configuration can change the actual bill.

October 2026 reference figures; taxes excluded
    OptionReference priceWhat the price describes
Cloudways DigitalOcean Premium Micro$14/month1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe, 1 TB transfer; backups and extras extra
Cloudways DigitalOcean Premium Small$28/month2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50 GB storage, 2 TB transfer; backups and extras extra
Kinsta Single 20GB$35/month ($350/year, saving $70)1 WordPress install, 20 GB bandwidth, 10 GB storage, 125 GB CDN bandwidth, 14-day backup retention
Kinsta Single 35k$35/month1 install, 35,000 monthly visits, 10 GB storage; the visits-based alternative to Single 20GB
Kinsta additional site+$30/month per siteAdded to a plan that permits extra installs
Kinsta additional storage+$20/month per 20 GBExtra SSD space beyond the plan allowance

What the first bill and the twelfth bill look like

One small site: Kinsta Single 20GB at $35/month totals $420 over 12 months, or $350 on annual billing. A $14 Cloudways server totals $168 over 12 months before backup storage (billed at $0.033/GB in our reference), email and any CDN add-on. Even with extras, Cloudways is usually cheaper for one small site, but the gap is narrower than headline prices suggest once you add what Kinsta bundles.

Five small sites: this is where the models diverge. Five sites on Kinsta mean a multi-site plan or per-site additions; on Cloudways they can share one $28 server if their combined resource use fits, plus backup storage and extras. For agencies and portfolio owners, that difference compounds every month.

Kinsta does not show the large introductory-to-renewal jumps common with budget shared hosts; its first-month-free offer on selected plans is a signup promotion, not a teaser rate that later multiplies. That said, neither provider promises prices will never change, so treat every figure here as a dated reference. Cloudways Flexible bills pay-as-you-go with no fixed-term renewal jump either, but provider prices and add-on rates have changed before and can change again.

Overage charges: the cost of outgrowing a plan

Kinsta publishes clear overage rates: $0.50 per 1,000 visits on visits-based plans, $0.50/GB of server bandwidth on bandwidth-based plans, $0.05/GB of CDN bandwidth, and $2/GB/month of extra disk storage, prorated daily. Overage notifications are enabled by default, and upgrading does not erase overages already incurred. Cloudways meters bandwidth by provider and region instead; our provider comparison lists those rates. On both hosts, a traffic spike has a price, know it before it happens.

How many websites can you actually run?

This is the question that decides the comparison for most buyers. Kinsta plans are built around WordPress installs: the entry plan covers one, and Kinsta's plan documentation explains that additional installs are billed per site, with multi-site plans available for agencies. A staging environment is included per site, which is genuinely useful for client work.

Cloudways Flexible places no per-site fee on applications. One server can host several WordPress sites, and your only real limits are the server's RAM, CPU, storage and bandwidth. That freedom cuts both ways: five busy stores on one small server will slow each other down, and Cloudways will not stop you from overloading it.

Rule of thumb: one or two important sites with a preference for simplicity lean Kinsta. Three or more sites, especially small brochure or content sites, lean Cloudways. Always size the Cloudways server for the combined workload, not the cheapest tier.

Backups, CDN, staging and migrations: what is bundled?

Confirm the scope of each service on the exact plan you choose
    ServiceCloudways FlexibleKinsta
BackupsOff-site backup storage billed per GB; confirm schedule and retentionDaily backups with 14-day retention on entry plans; check retention on your tier
CDNOptional paid add-on per domain125 GB/month CDN bandwidth included on entry plans
StagingDocumented staging and push/pull workflow per applicationStaging environment included per site; premium staging available as an add-on
MigrationsFirst managed application migration free; confirm current termsUnlimited free migrations listed on the pricing page
EmailNot bundled; budget for a mailbox serviceNot a mailbox host either; both need a separate email provider

Neither host bundles business email mailboxes, so budget for a separate provider in both cases. Kinsta's bundled CDN and unlimited migrations reduce the number of separate decisions a new customer must make. Cloudways' extras are individually cheap but must be added deliberately, or the comparison against Kinsta's bundle is not honest.

Speed and capacity: what we can and cannot claim

Kinsta has historically publicised Google Cloud Platform infrastructure, including compute-optimised C2 and later C3D machines, and its current documentation lists 30 selectable data center locations. Its present technical material describes "leading cloud platforms" more generally, so do not assume every location runs identical hardware. Cloudways lets you choose between five providers, including Google Cloud and AWS, plus DigitalOcean, Vultr and Linode. On paper, both can be very fast.

What we will not do is declare a winner without a controlled test. Review sites that rank these hosts by a single speed test usually test one default configuration on one server location, which tells you little about your site, your plugins and your visitors. Our Cloudways provider comparison explains how to think about infrastructure choice instead.

Practical advice: use Kinsta's first-month-free offer or Cloudways' three-day trial to run your actual site, measure it with your own tools, and only then commit. A weekend of testing beats any review, including this one.

    Support and management boundaries

Kinsta advertises 24/7 human support in eight languages and is widely regarded as a support-led product; its dashboard, MyKinsta, centralises site management, analytics and usage alerts, including default overage notifications. Cloudways offers 24/7 chat and ticketing on its standard support tier, with paid tiers for faster or deeper assistance.

Both companies draw a line at your code. Neither will debug a broken plugin, fix a custom theme or develop your site as part of standard support. If hands-on application help is a requirement, confirm the exact scope in writing before buying, whichever host you choose.

We have not measured response times at either company, so this guide makes no claim about which support team is faster or better.

Trial, refund and cancellation: how safely can you test?

Refund exclusionsUsage and add-on charges are billed as consumedOverages, one-time fees and dedicated server fees excluded
CancellationStop the server; hourly billing endsCancel in MyKinsta; data is permanently deleted, so export first

Kinsta's money-back guarantee terms are unusually specific: the 30-day window starts at activation, does not restart if you switch plans, and any fees incurred are deducted from the refund. On plans with a free first month, the guarantee runs from the renewal date. Cloudways' hourly pay-as-you-go model means a short test costs very little even without a refund policy.

Before cancelling either host, export a full backup you control. Kinsta warns that cancellation permanently deletes live and staging environments and DNS records; Cloudways deletes servers and their data. Your own off-site copy is the only guaranteed one.

    Who should buy which host?

Kinsta is the better fit when

    • You run one or two WordPress sites that matter to your business and want a guided, bundled product.
    • You value an included CDN, unlimited free migrations and a polished dashboard over the lowest possible bill.
    • You do not want to think about server sizes, providers or separate backup billing.
    • Your budget comfortably covers $35/month or more per site.

Cloudways is the better fit when

    • You run three or more sites and per-site pricing would multiply your costs.
    • You want to choose the cloud provider, region and server size, and scale resources as you grow.
    • You are comfortable adding backup storage, a CDN and email as separate, itemised services.
    • You want pay-as-you-go billing with no long commitment and no renewal jump.

    Try Cloudways free

Before you commit: a five-step check

    1. Count your sites. One or two leans Kinsta; three or more leans Cloudways. This single factor decides most comparisons.
    2. Price the complete setup. Add backups, CDN and email to the Cloudways figure; add extra sites or storage to the Kinsta figure. Compare totals, not headlines.
    3. Test with your real site. Use Kinsta's free month or Cloudways' three-day trial and measure your own pages.
    4. Confirm support scope. Ask each provider, in writing, whether they will help with your specific plugins and theme.
    5. Keep your own backup. Whatever you choose, maintain an off-site copy you control before migrating or cancelling anything.

Cloudways vs Kinsta: frequently asked questions

    Is Cloudways cheaper than Kinsta?

For a single small website, the entry prices are close: a Cloudways DigitalOcean Premium Micro server was $14/month in our October 20 reference, while Kinsta's Single 20GB plan is $35/month. Cloudways becomes much better value when you run several websites on one server, because Kinsta charges per additional site. Kinsta's price includes its CDN, migrations and dashboard tooling, so compare complete setups, not headline numbers.

    Is Kinsta faster than Cloudways?

GoodHosters has not run a controlled side-by-side test, so this guide does not declare a speed winner. Both hosts use serious cloud infrastructure and caching. Test your own website, with your plugins and audience locations, on the exact plans you are considering.

Does Kinsta raise prices on renewal like shared hosts?

Kinsta's published pricing does not show the large introductory-to-renewal jumps common with budget shared hosting. Its first-month-free offer on some plans is a signup promotion, not a low introductory rate that later multiplies. Confirm the ongoing monthly price on the checkout page before paying.

Can I host multiple websites on Cloudways?

Yes. A Cloudways Flexible server can run multiple applications that share its resources, which is why it often wins on cost for several small sites. Kinsta plans are structured around the number of WordPress installs, and additional sites are billed per site.

Which is easier for a non-technical owner?

Kinsta is the more guided product: one site per plan tier, a purpose-built dashboard, included migrations and a bundled CDN. Cloudways Flexible asks you to choose a provider, server size and separate extras such as backup storage and email. Neither requires server administration, but Cloudways rewards buyers willing to make those choices.

Do both hosts offer a free trial or refund?

Cloudways offers a three-day Flexible trial without a credit card. Kinsta offers a first-month-free promotion on selected plans and a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time customers, with overages and one-time fees excluded. Read each provider's current terms before relying on either.

    Which is better for WooCommerce?

Both can run WooCommerce, but neither guarantees checkout capacity. Kinsta offers WooCommerce-oriented plans with included tooling; Cloudways lets you size a server for your store's peak demand. Test personalised carts, payment webhooks and background tasks on the actual plan before moving a live store.

Sources and the limits of this comparison

Kinsta figures were checked on October 22, 2026 against Kinsta's pricing page, its plan documentation, its money-back guarantee terms and its billing FAQ. Cloudways figures come from our October 20 research against the Cloudways pricing page, backup pricing, trial terms and migration policy.

Limitations: GoodHosters has not run a controlled speed, uptime or support test on either host, and this article claims none. Prices and plan structures change; the figures above are dated references, not live quotes. Kinsta has renamed and restructured plans several times, so confirm the current plan names and allowances on its pricing page before buying. Always verify the final checkout price, including tax, on the provider's own site.
