Cloudways WordPress hosting review: the short answer

Cloudways is a sensible shortlist option for a growing WordPress business that needs configurable resources, staging and managed cloud infrastructure. It is not an automatic speed upgrade or the cheapest way to launch a small blog. Choose it when those tools solve a real limitation, not just because the word “cloud” sounds faster.

Flexible lets you choose a cloud server and manage its capacity through Cloudways. Autonomous is a separate WordPress-focused autoscaling product. The right choice depends on whether you want server control or help handling variable demand.

This is a research-based review of published features, not a hands-on benchmark. We reviewed official Cloudways material on . We have not measured Cloudways page speed, uptime or support response times.

Who should use Cloudways for WordPress?

Our buying guidance, based on website needs rather than claimed benchmark scores
    Your websiteRecommendationReason
A small first blogCompare simpler bundled hosting firstExtra tools may not justify the complete monthly cost
A business site hitting resource limitsTrial Flexible with the real siteCapacity choices and monitoring can help diagnose constraints
Several client websitesConsider Flexible with capacity planningOne dashboard is convenient, but sites compete for server resources
A store or membership site with demand spikesCompare Autonomous and a suitably sized Flexible setupUncached work and variable concurrency matter more than monthly visitor totals
A developer requiring root accessChoose another server modelCloudways does not provide root access

A host change will not fix every WordPress problem. Oversized images, a slow third-party service, heavy plugins or inefficient database queries can remain slow on a larger server. Diagnose those issues before paying for a move.

If you mainly need a first website with email and domain setup in one package, compare our Hostinger WordPress review or use the Hosting Finder. That is a cost-and-complexity comparison, not a claim that one host always performs better.

Best starting questionWhat resources does my site require?Does variable demand justify this product's cost?

The official WordPress page presents both options. Read the Autonomous FAQ before transferring assumptions about Flexible to Autonomous. Confirm staging, migration, backup retention and application compatibility for the actual product you intend to buy.

Our recommendation: start the comparison with Flexible when you want to choose resources and can monitor them. Evaluate Autonomous when autoscaling is a business requirement, especially for dynamic WordPress workloads. Neither decision should rely on a marketing claim about handling “unlimited” traffic.

Is Cloudways really faster than shared hosting?

There is no honest universal yes. Cloudways offers configurable cloud resources and a managed caching stack, which can help when your current plan is constrained. But a well-configured shared host may already be fast enough for a modest site, and a poorly configured WordPress installation can remain slow after migration.

The fair comparison is the same website under comparable conditions. A blank WordPress page on one host and a plugin-heavy store on another tells you little about which service your customers will experience.

    1. Keep the workload consistent: same theme, plugins, content, PHP compatibility and similar cache settings. Record any unavoidable differences.
    2. Test several real pages: home, a long article, search, a product and checkout where applicable. Separate cached public pages from logged-in or personalised requests.
    3. Use repeat measurements: keep the test location and device profile consistent, and compare typical results rather than one unusually good run.
    4. Inspect the bottleneck: note server response, Largest Contentful Paint, interaction responsiveness and layout shifts. Slow images and scripts are not always a hosting problem.
    5. Test safe, authorised concurrency: use a staging environment and follow the host's rules. Do not stress-test a live store during sales.

A short trial cannot establish annual uptime, and a Lighthouse score is not proof of real-user Core Web Vitals. Use field data when available and longer monitoring before making reliability claims. We publish no invented “twice as fast” result or speed-winner badge.

Breeze, object caching and WordPress management tools

Cloudways' official feature page lists the free Breeze WordPress plugin and built-in caching technologies. Its Breeze guide explains integration with Varnish. The stack and available controls depend on the configuration, so do not assume every named cache is simultaneously active on every server.

    • Page caching: reuses a generated public page instead of rebuilding it for every visitor. It can help a blog but cannot safely cache every personalised response.
    • Object caching: reuses frequently requested data to reduce database work. Object Cache Pro eligibility varies; verify it for your selected server rather than assuming all entry plans include it.
    • Staging and cloning: Cloudways advertises these tools for testing changes away from the live site. Confirm their behaviour and cost for your chosen product.
    • CDN: delivery closer to visitors can help static assets and eligible cached pages, but it does not fix every origin or application bottleneck.

The Autonomous FAQ lists Object Cache Pro for supported WordPress applications. On Flexible, check the Object Cache Pro instructions and current plan eligibility before counting it as included. A Redis service and an installed, working object-cache plugin are not the same thing.

For shops and membership sites, check cache exclusions for carts, checkout, accounts and logged-in sessions. Test that one user never receives another user's personalised content. Adding several cache plugins without a plan can cause stale pages and conflicting settings.

The WordPress page advertises management of multiple sites in one dashboard. On Flexible, that does not mean each application has unlimited resources: applications share the server you allocate. Leave capacity for backups, cron tasks, imports and traffic bursts.

Which Cloudways server should you buy for WordPress?

Do not choose solely by monthly visits. A cached blog, a multilingual store and a membership site with the same traffic count can have very different CPU, memory and database demands. Start with a configuration that can run your real workload, then observe it before upgrading.

For a modest site, compare entry configurations. For several sites, a busy store or heavy plugins, trial more memory and check CPU, database pressure and concurrent work. These are sizing principles, not guaranteed visitor capacities or a recommendation that a particular plan fits every store.

Our Cloudways pricing guide records the October 20 pricing snapshot: Flexible advertised from $11/month, with the displayed DigitalOcean Premium Micro at $14/month and Small at $28/month. These refer to different advertised starting points and configurations, not a single universal WordPress price.

For illustration, a $28 server plus one $4.99/month Cloudflare Enterprise domain and one $1.50/month Rackspace mailbox totals $34.49/month before Flexible backup storage, usage and taxes. Those optional services are not compulsory for every website; transactional email has its own requirements.

Flexible backup storage is published at $0.033/GB per server. Domain registration, mailboxes and maintenance should not be assumed included. Check the live plan quote, location, server family and add-ons before purchase. Temporary promotions are discussed separately in our Cloudways discount guide.

WordPress backups, staging and security: check the recovery plan

Cloudways provides backup controls, but a backup feature is only useful if its schedule, retention and restore process meet your needs. The server-level backup guide explains Flexible settings; off-site backup charges explains its separate storage bill.

For a blog, decide how much recently published content you can afford to lose. For a store, even a recent backup may omit new orders. Plan how you would recover order data and reconcile payments before a failure happens. Confirm the product's available restore options instead of promising zero data loss.

    • Test major plugin, theme and PHP changes in staging first.
    • Keep WordPress and trusted plugins maintained; remove unused software.
    • Restrict administrator access and use strong, distinct credentials.
    • Verify HTTPS, scheduled tasks, forms and outgoing email after migration.
    • Keep an independent recovery copy where appropriate and test restoration safely.

The official staging guide documents staging for Flexible and Autonomous with push/pull workflows. Do not blindly push a staging database over a live store: it can overwrite fresh orders and customer changes. Clarify what is being copied and preserve live transactions. Managed infrastructure does not remove your responsibility for application security.

What does Cloudways manage, and what stays your job?

Cloudways manages the cloud hosting stack and advertises standard 24/7 live chat and ticket support. Read the support plan scope rather than interpreting “managed WordPress” as unlimited help with every plugin, theme or business process.

You still need someone responsible for application updates, licences, content, checkout testing and resolving custom-code problems. Optional maintenance or upgraded support may cover additional work, but get the exact scope and price before relying on it.

The platform is not a traditional cPanel hosting package and root access is not provided. Developers should verify stack compatibility, supported software and deployment needs before moving an unusual WordPress setup.

Before buying, ask support one concrete question about your current problem, such as a failing cron task or a plugin compatibility requirement. That tests whether the scope matches your needs; it is not evidence of a guaranteed response time. We have not tested support ourselves.

How to trial and migrate a real WordPress website

Cloudways advertises a three-day trial without a credit card. Review Flexible trial eligibility and restrictions; do not assume every provider or resource size is available. Adding payment details can change the trial status, so confirm paid conversion and cancellation.

The WordPress Migrator plugin offers a self-service migration path. Cloudways also advertises a first managed migration free; confirm eligibility and the work covered through its managed migration instructions. We have not completed an account migration ourselves.

    1. Back up the current site and record the hosting, DNS and email arrangements.
    2. Copy the real website into an isolated test environment. Prevent test emails, payments and unwanted indexing.
    3. Check public pages, admin access, forms, search, scheduled tasks and email delivery.
    4. For commerce, test checkout safely and plan how fresh orders will be preserved during the move.
    5. Compare performance and resource pressure using the same workload.
    6. Change DNS only after the copy is ready, monitor the live site and keep the old host until the move is stable.

Use our completed website migration checklist for practical checks and our Cloudways WooCommerce guide for store-specific order and checkout precautions. The dedicated Cloudways migration guide is still being prepared.

If the trial does not demonstrate a useful improvement, do not upgrade just to justify the time spent. Consult the billing guide and remove chargeable services correctly; taking a site offline is not the same as ending billing. We do not promise a general 30-day refund window.

Cloudways WordPress pros, cons and our final recommendation

A balanced decision summary, not a hands-on rating
    AdvantagesTrade-offs
Configurable Flexible resources and provider choicesYou must monitor capacity and compare configurations
Caching, staging and cloning toolsAvailability and correct setup vary; no automatic speed guarantee
Managed infrastructure without running the operating system yourselfNo root access; website maintenance is not automatically included
Separate WordPress autoscaling productDifferent allowances and costs require a separate quote
Trial and migration optionsA short trial cannot establish annual reliability

Choose Cloudways if resource control and workflow tools solve a real WordPress problem, your trial works with the actual site and the full bill is sustainable. Choose simpler hosting if the site is small, the budget is tight or you need an all-in-one package without extra decisions.

Before paying, confirm the product, server location, caching eligibility, recovery settings, email arrangement and support responsibilities. That is a stronger buying decision than choosing a host because an unverified review calls it “the fastest”.

    Cloudways WordPress hosting FAQ

Is Cloudways faster than shared hosting for WordPress?

Not automatically. Cloudways provides configurable resources and caching tools that may help a constrained WordPress site, but GoodHosters has not run a controlled comparison. Test the same site, pages and cache settings before treating a move as a speed upgrade.

Is Cloudways good for a first WordPress blog?

It can work, but a simple bundled host may offer better value for a small first blog. Cloudways makes more sense when resource control, staging or managing several sites solves an actual problem and you can afford the complete monthly bill.

    Does Cloudways Flexible autoscale WordPress?

Flexible offers server sizing and vertical scaling that you manage. Autonomous is the separate WordPress autoscaling product. Its allowances, usage charges and feature set need a separate comparison.

    Does Cloudways include WordPress caching?

Cloudways advertises its free Breeze plugin and built-in caching. Object Cache Pro eligibility and stack capabilities vary by configuration. Confirm your selected server and application settings rather than assuming every entry plan includes every caching feature.

Are WordPress backups free on Cloudways?

Flexible off-site backup storage is separately charged at the published rate of $0.033 per GB per server. Review retention and billing rules. Autonomous has different inclusions, so do not apply Flexible backup charges to both products.

Will Cloudways maintain all my plugins and fix my theme?

Do not assume that standard hosting support includes ongoing WordPress maintenance or custom development. You remain responsible for your site's plugins, theme and business workflows unless you purchase an explicitly scoped maintenance service.

Can I move an existing WordPress site to Cloudways?

Cloudways offers a WordPress Migrator plugin and advertises a first managed migration free, subject to eligibility and scope. Test the migrated site before changing DNS, keep the old host available and confirm handling of fresh orders or form submissions.
