Quick verdict: is InterServer VPS worth it?
InterServer VPS is worth considering if you want low-cost, month-to-month Linux hosting with root access and can take responsibility for the server. It is not automatically the right upgrade for a beginner: the $3/month entry plan buys virtual-server resources, not a fully maintained WordPress service.
The official VPS page advertises Linux from $3/month and managed-support eligibility at eight slices, currently $24/month on the Linux grid. That difference is the most important buying decision: are you purchasing resources you will administer, or a larger plan with a defined support scope?
Research method: we reviewed InterServer's official plan and documentation pages on October 23, 2026. This is a research-based review, not a hands-on benchmark. We do not claim measured uptime, speed or support response times. Affiliate disclosure: GoodHosters may earn a commission if you buy through our link. Linux VPS prices and slice specifications
A slice is InterServer's unit for choosing a VPS size. The main Linux VPS grid offers one through 32 slices. These selected sizes show the resource progression without assuming that each slice adds a CPU core:
| Slices | Monthly | Cores | RAM | SSD | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $3 | 1 | 2 GB | 40 GB | 2 TB |
| 2 | $6 | 1 | 4 GB | 80 GB | 4 TB |
| 4 | $12 | 2 | 8 GB | 160 GB | 8 TB |
| 8 | $24 | 4 | 16 GB | 320 GB | 16 TB |
Official pages disagree about disk space. The main grid lists 40 GB SSD for one Linux slice, while the Cheap VPS page lists 30 GB per slice. We use the explicit main grid above, but you should confirm the provisioned disk size in your order. Mixing old and new configurations would produce a misleading comparison.
One slice is a reasonable candidate for a test environment or small Linux service. Two or four slices give more memory and disk headroom, but these are starting points for evaluation, not visitor-count guarantees. Managed support starts at eight slices
InterServer's current main page advertises included managed support at 8 or more slices. On the selected Linux grid, eight slices cost $24/month with four cores and 16 GB RAM. Do not apply the eight-slice Linux price to Windows or to a configuration with paid add-ons.
The VPS FAQ explains that InterServer manages what it installs. Without a control panel, that means operating-system-level assistance; with a supported panel, it can include software installed through that panel. Eligibility is not unlimited application development, plugin debugging or outsourced site administration.
- Below eight slices: budget for your own administration or outside help; do not buy expecting included full management.
- Eight slices and above: ask support to confirm your operating system, panel, database and software are within scope.
- For any size: establish who handles patching, service monitoring, recovery and restores before moving a revenue-generating site.
The support threshold can change. Older reviews are not a substitute for the current order and support agreement.
Linux, Windows and control-panel choices
The entry Linux product uses KVM virtualization with root access. That allows custom web servers, application runtimes and server configuration, but it also lets you make changes that break the service. Choose an actively supported operating-system release that suits your software, not an obsolete version mentioned in an old tutorial.
The Windows VPS page advertises a $10/month starting configuration: two slices, one core, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD and 4 TB transfer, with Remote Desktop access. Windows is relevant for Windows-specific applications; a typical WordPress installation does not require it. Verify Windows version and licence terms in the order.
The cPanel VPS page says cPanel/WHM is added in the order flow. We could not verify a current panel licence price. DirectAdmin is another advertised option, but do not assume any paid panel is included in the headline server price. A panel simplifies common tasks; it does not remove security or backup responsibilities.
InterServer also sells storage VPS with SATA-focused capacity. A storage-oriented backup server is a different product from an SSD application VPS. Choose by workload and recovery needs, not simply the largest disk allowance.
The real cost beyond the server price
The base Linux arithmetic is straightforward: one slice at $3/month is $36 for 12 months; four slices at $12/month are $144; eight slices at $24/month are $288. These are server-only estimates at an unchanged price, not complete annual quotations.
- Panel licences: obtain the fee for your panel and account count.
- Independent backups: include storage, retention and any restore-service cost.
- Administration: allow for your time or a paid administrator, especially below the management threshold.
- Other services: domains, transactional email, monitoring, CDN and extra IPs may belong elsewhere in the budget.
- Tax and usage: check applicable taxes, transfer limits and overage rules for your selected configuration.
The official FAQ describes month-to-month billing and no VPS trial or money-back guarantee. Cancellation is not the same as a refund. Optional account credit is applied to monthly invoices; the FAQ does not advertise a monthly discount for prepaying credit. Do not assume the shared-hosting refund guarantee or $5 Price Lock campaign applies to VPS.

Check InterServer VPS plansPerformance, locations and scaling
InterServer's VPS features page lists New York City, Dallas and Los Angeles for Linux deployments. Confirm the available location for your exact product at checkout; this does not establish identical availability for Windows. A server close to your primary audience can reduce network latency, but location alone does not predict page speed.
The main grid advertises a 10 Gbps shared port and a transfer quota per plan. A shared port is not guaranteed dedicated 10 Gbps throughput for your VPS, and a transfer allowance is not a speed result. CPU allocation, disk I/O, competing activity, application code and caching all matter.
We have not tested this platform against competitors. Before committing a busy site, measure uncached responses, database queries, memory pressure and realistic concurrent requests. Test the purchase or login path too; a fast cached homepage does not prove fast checkout.
Slice-based resizing gives a way to change resources. Ask how your chosen product handles upgrades and downgrades, whether a reboot is needed, and whether reducing storage requires a migration. Do not assume zero-downtime resizing, automatic scaling or dedicated-server CPU performance.

Backups and security responsibilities
We could not confirm a default included backup schedule, retention period or restore service from the official pages reviewed. Redundant storage protects against some hardware failures; it does not reliably reverse accidental deletion, ransomware or a bad deployment. A panel's backup feature is not proof that independent copies are already being created.
- Confirm who creates backups, where they are stored, how long they remain and what restores cost.
- Keep an independent off-server copy of files, database exports and the configuration needed to rebuild.
- Test a restore before relying on the backup, then repeat after major application changes.
- For stores, set backup frequency around acceptable order-data loss rather than a generic daily schedule.
For a self-managed Linux server, restrict SSH access, use keys, configure a firewall, patch the operating system and applications, and monitor availability and capacity. Verify email-port policies before planning to run your own mail service. Root access is a capability, not an automatic security benefit.
VPS vs shared and managed hosting
Stay on shared hosting if your site works within its limits and you mainly need convenient publishing. A VPS adds control and maintenance work; it is not inherently a speed upgrade. Compare the Standard and Boost choices in our InterServer plan guide.
Consider InterServer VPS for custom runtimes, background workers, root-level configuration or projects you can administer. Resource isolation and flexibility are useful, but sizing must follow measurements rather than a claim that a certain slice count supports a fixed number of visitors.
Consider managed hosting instead when avoiding server maintenance matters more than root access. Our Cloudways WordPress review explains a different management model, and our Hostinger VPS review covers another self-managed alternative. Compare complete costs and responsibilities, not just entry prices.
If you are unsure which model suits you, try the Hosting Finder. No provider wins for every budget, application and experience level.
Before you buy or move a live website
- Record the quote: product, location, resources, panel fee, tax and renewal terms.
- Confirm support scope: describe your application and ask exactly what help is included.
- Prepare recovery: create an off-server backup and verify that you can restore it.
- Test a copy: check SSL, forms, login, scheduled jobs, outbound email and payments without sending test charges to real customers.
- Measure load: monitor memory, CPU, storage and database behaviour with representative requests.
- Plan the cutover: arrange DNS changes, keep the old host available and prevent new orders or edits being lost during the move.
Ask whether migration assistance applies to your particular VPS and software. A shared-hosting migration promise should not be assumed to cover an arbitrary root-managed application stack.
Pros, cons and final recommendation
Reasons to shortlist it
- Low advertised Linux entry price and month-to-month billing.
- Root access, KVM virtualization and a broad slice-size range.
- Linux and Windows choices for different applications.
- Published managed-support eligibility at eight slices, with a defined scope to confirm.
Reasons to look elsewhere
- Entry plans require administration skills or paid help.
- No VPS trial or money-back guarantee in the official FAQ.
- Panel and backup costs need confirmation; the headline price is not a full-service budget.
- Official storage specifications conflict, and listed Linux locations are US-based.
Our recommendation: shortlist InterServer if affordable server control is the goal and you have a clear maintenance and recovery plan. If you want someone else to run the server so you can focus on a blog or store, compare managed options first. Buy the smallest configuration that passes your own workload test, not automatically the cheapest slice.

Check InterServer VPS plansFrequently asked questions
How much does InterServer VPS cost?
The official Linux VPS grid advertises one slice at $3/month with 1 core, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD and 2 TB transfer. Windows VPS starts at $10/month. Panel licences, backups, taxes and other extras can increase the total. These are October 23, 2026 research snapshots; confirm your configuration at checkout.
Is InterServer VPS fully managed?
Not at the entry price. InterServer advertises included managed support at eight or more slices. Its FAQ limits management to what it installs, including the operating system and supported panel-installed software. Ask about your exact stack; this is not a promise to maintain arbitrary applications.
Does InterServer VPS include cPanel for $3?
Do not assume it does. The cPanel VPS page says to add cPanel/WHM in the order flow. We could not verify a current licence fee, so obtain the complete quote before ordering.
Does InterServer VPS include automatic backups?
We could not confirm an included automatic backup schedule, retention period or restore service from the official pages reviewed. Redundant disks and panel backup tools are not the same as independent backups. Confirm the service in writing or arrange and test your own off-server backups.
Is there an InterServer VPS free trial or refund guarantee?
The official VPS FAQ says there is no trial or money-back guarantee for VPS. Billing is month to month and cancellation is available, but cancellation should not be confused with a refund for an already-paid invoice.
Is InterServer VPS good for WordPress?
It can suit WordPress when you need root access or a custom stack and can manage the server. A beginner who mainly wants to publish a blog may be better served by shared or managed WordPress hosting. Traffic alone does not determine the required slice count.
Does every slice add one CPU core?
No. The current Linux grid lists 1 core for both one and two slices, 2 cores for four slices and 4 cores for eight slices. Memory, storage and transfer increase with slices, but CPU counts must be checked in the selected plan.
